  {"id":8837,"date":"2016-11-03T18:47:14","date_gmt":"2016-11-03T22:47:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/digital.hbs.edu\/platform-rctom\/submission\/the-main-ingredient-in-coca-cola-is-running-out\/"},"modified":"2016-11-04T00:12:54","modified_gmt":"2016-11-04T04:12:54","slug":"always-coca-cola","status":"publish","type":"hck-submission","link":"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/submission\/always-coca-cola\/","title":{"rendered":"Always Coca Cola?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Coca Cola is a contributor to, and victim of, climate change<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That cold Coca Cola on your desk has gone through a lot to get there.<\/p>\n<p>The carbon footprint of a single 330ml can is 170g\/CO<sub>2<\/sub>, which is the result of: sourcing and producing packaging materials; growing, processing and transporting ingredients; manufacturing, distributing and chilling the product; and recycling the empty package<sup>1<\/sup>. Considering products from The Cola Company\u2019s stable of beverages are enjoyed <strong>1.9 billion times<\/strong> <strong>per day<\/strong> globally<sup>2<\/sup> it is notable that the world\u2019s largest drinks manufacturer has established an ambitious sustainability program which \u201cseeks to drive system wide change beyond small operational improvements\u2026and provide leadership that will raise the bar for our system and the industry<sup>3<\/sup>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The environmental protection element of the program focuses on: responsible water use; increasing recycling of packaging; reducing the carbon footprint of each drink produced and sustainable sourcing of agricultural products.<\/p>\n<p>Coca Cola is not just a contributor to Climate Change, but also at risk from its physical manifestations. The Environment Agency (a UK Government body) acknowledges that those businesses most vulnerable to the effects of Climate Change are ones which<sup>4<\/sup>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Operate large, or long-lived fixed assets or buildings<\/li>\n<li>Have complex supply chains<\/li>\n<li>Are reliant on climatically sensitive inputs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The nature of Coca Cola\u2019s business means it scores highly on all three of these criteria.\u00a0 I could focus on any of the above, but the scarcity of the company\u2019s main ingredient seems a logical place to start.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Water is becoming increasingly scarce. \u00a0Coca Cola needs a lot of it<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>300 billion liters of water were used to produce 151 billion liters of finished product across The Coca Cola company\u2019s 500 drinks brands in 2015.\u00a0 An additional 15 billion liters of water were used by customers who sell fountain beverages, meaning 166 billion liters of water were contained in Coca Cola products.\u00a0 This figure does not include water which is embedded in products from the cultivation and processing of agricultural ingredients (such as sugarcane). It is estimated this accounts for 80% of Coca Cola\u2019s total water footprint<sup>5<\/sup>, implying an annual water requirement of ~1,500 billion liters.<\/p>\n<p>Global water withdrawals have tripled over the last 50 years to meet agricultural, industrial, and domestic demand<sup>6<\/sup>.\u00a0 Without action, global water demand could exceed supply by as much as 40% by 2030. Demand for water will continue to rise as industrialization and urbanization in emerging markets accelerates.\u00a0 Rising global temperatures may constrict the supply of water, and a less predictable climate means there could be greater uncertainty and volatility in future supply<sup>7<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/11\/Water-scarcity2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-8825\" src=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/11\/Water-scarcity2-300x282.jpg\" alt=\"water-scarcity2\" width=\"300\" height=\"282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/11\/Water-scarcity2-300x282.jpg 300w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/11\/Water-scarcity2-768x722.jpg 768w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/11\/Water-scarcity2-1024x963.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/11\/Water-scarcity2-600x564.jpg 600w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/11\/Water-scarcity2.jpg 1070w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Responsible water use is a key pillar of Coca Cola\u2019s strategy\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Coca Cola has experienced first-hand direct impacts to its business stemming from (perceived) misuse of scarce water resources.\u00a0 In 2004 the company was forced to close a bottling plant in Kerala, India after it was accused of exceeding its permitted use of water during a time of drought<sup>8<\/sup>.\u00a0 This caused significant anger amongst the local population, approximately 70% of whom were dependent on agriculture \u2013 and the availability of water \u2013 for their livelihood.<\/p>\n<p>Coke was ultimately found to have been acting within the law, but the company suffered reputational damage and consumers deserted the brand.\u00a0 This served as a catalyst for the company to adopt responsible water use as a key business priority<sup>9<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2007, Coca Cola committed that by 2020 it would replenish each liter of water used directly in its beverages.\u00a0 In 2015, Coca Cola replenished 191 billion liters of water, which is 115% of the 166 billion liters contained in its global sales volume; the company achieved its goal five years ahead of schedule<sup>10<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>You can hear more from Coke\u2019s Chief Sustainability Officer on how this was achieved <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/video\/news\/2016\/08\/29\/coke-water.cnnmoney\/index.html\">here<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coca-colacompany.com\/press-center\/press-releases\/coca-cola-is-the-first-fortune-500-company-to-replenish-all-the-water-it-uses-globally\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2026but the company needs to do more \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Whilst this is unquestionably a laudable accomplishment, I believe Coke needs to do more.<\/p>\n<p>191 billion liters is a drop in the ocean (approximately 13%) of the company\u2019s estimated 1,500-billion-liter total annual water footprint.
