  {"id":36149,"date":"2018-11-13T19:43:04","date_gmt":"2018-11-14T00:43:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/digital.hbs.edu\/platform-rctom\/submission\/future-x-and-open-innovation-at-nokia\/"},"modified":"2018-11-13T21:45:53","modified_gmt":"2018-11-14T02:45:53","slug":"future-x-and-open-innovation-at-nokia","status":"publish","type":"hck-submission","link":"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/submission\/future-x-and-open-innovation-at-nokia\/","title":{"rendered":"Future X and Open Innovation at Nokia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To meet the future, the Nokia<a href=\"#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\">[i]<\/a> is leveraging open innovation<a href=\"#_edn2\" name=\"_ednref2\">[ii]<\/a> to establish a footprint in the market for Internet of Things (IoT). \u00a0In February 2018, Nokia launched its new strategy called Future X, which is its vision for \u201cIndustry 4.0.\u201d Industry 4.0 is a world where industries leverage cloud and analytic technologies to achieve new levels of agility, efficiency, and productivity across multiple industries.\u00a0 Nokia\u2019s focus has shifted from communication in the physical world to digitization of the physical world to ultimately automate and optimize it.\u00a0 The firm has made an initial investment of $350M to crowdsource new ideas for undefined problems. <a href=\"#_edn3\" name=\"_ednref3\">[iii]<\/a> \u00a0Its goal is to support companies with novel ideas get-to-market<a href=\"#_edn4\" name=\"_ednref4\">[iv]<\/a>.\u00a0 Several concerns around cybersecurity and its strategy make the viability of Future X questionable.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/11\/Future-X.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-36102\" src=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/11\/Future-X-1024x531.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"332\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/11\/Future-X-1024x531.png 1024w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/11\/Future-X-300x156.png 300w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/11\/Future-X-768x398.png 768w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/11\/Future-X-600x311.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>How open innovation works at Nokia?<a href=\"#_edn5\" name=\"_ednref5\"><strong>[v]<\/strong><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Bell Labs Prize is an annual open competition.\u00a0 The problem is undefined, but the themes are centered around digitization.\u00a0 Participants submit a 250-word essay on their idea and are encouraged to demonstrate a prototype. It must also be balanced on current principles and further\/future advancements and innovations<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"168\"><strong>Feasibility<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"456\">Can a proof of concept, simulation or demonstration be built in the course of the competition? What is required to do so? In order to build a commercially viable (revenue and profit-generating) solution, what more would be required?<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Stage 2 candidates are invited to work at Bell Labs\u2019 17 research centers with a Nobel Prize-winning team<a href=\"#_edn9\" name=\"_ednref9\">[ix]<\/a>. The top three winners altogether are awarded $175,000 in seed-funding and the opportunity to join Bell Labs to work towards commercial viability.<\/p>\n<p>In February 2018, Nokia Capital Group (NCG) established a $350 M Investment Fund for the competition<a href=\"#_edn7\" name=\"_ednref7\">[vii]<\/a><a href=\"#_edn8\" name=\"_ednref8\">[viii]<\/a>. Ideas\u00a0generated thus far are fascinating. For example, the 2017 winner Continuum Technologies\u2019 created fabrics embedded with nanotechnology. The product provides real-time monitoring of vital signs and health data. This technology has massive potential for the IoT landscape.<\/p>\n<p><em>Why are Internet of Things (IoT) and open innovation important to Nokia?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>IoT is considered the next generation of advanced communication<a href=\"#_edn10\" name=\"_ednref10\">[x]<\/a>.\u00a0 IoT is defined as sensors and actuators connected by networks to computing systems that autonomously exchange data between them\u201d<a href=\"#_edn11\" name=\"_ednref11\">[xi]<\/a>.\u00a0 McKinsey estimates that by 2020, there will be 50 billion &#8220;things&#8221; (machines, sensors, and gadgets) connected to the internet that will increase efficiencies and improve customer service in the Industrial marketplace. Nokia envisions that sensors can be used in a range of industries, including home, retail, oil and gas, shipping, etc. \u00a0IoT is estimated to generate $1.1 Trillion (including consumer surplus) per year in 2025 across nine business settings<a href=\"#_edn12\" name=\"_ednref12\">[xii]<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>How does open innovation fit into the short-term and long-term? <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Nokia leverages open innovation to diversify its core business beyond its tradition business segments. \u00a0Since Nokia does not have sufficient resources, it leverages the competition to identify potential partners \u2013 universities, start-ups, and companies \u2013 with ideas and capabilities.\u00a0 In the short term, Nokia plans to be one of the first movers and early adopters of the latest technologies in IoT.\u00a0 \u00a0In the long term, Nokia plans to create Future X.\u00a0 It also wants to expand its product mix to include a portfolio of gadgets for the next generation that solve complex industrial problems.\u00a0 Furthermore, it aims to be the biggest player in terms of research (an incubator) for IoT.<\/p>\n<p><em>Recommendations for Nokia<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Future X is a massive undertaking.\u00a0 Nokia must develop practical solutions to several challenges to achieve scale.\u00a0 First, it needs strict protocols for data due to potential security risks<a href=\"#_edn13\" name=\"_ednref13\">[xiii]<\/a>.\u00a0 Although Nokia has been strategic by investing in cybersecurity (CS), there are concerns about the potential impact an attack could have<a href=\"#_edn14\" name=\"_ednref14\">[xiv]<\/a>.\u00a0 \u00a0Secondly, Nokia needs to narrow its scope. Future X casts a wide net in terms of target industries. Is Nokia spreading itself thin? It risks the agility to adapt and respond to consumer demands quickly.\u00a0 Finally, Nokia should consider expanding coverage beyond developed markets.\u00a0 McKinsey reports that a 40% potential increase in emerging markets, albeit their limited infrastructure at-present.<\/p>\n<p><em>Author\u2019s corner: A few open-ended questions for you?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Cyber security (CS) is a major risk.
