  {"id":22942,"date":"2017-11-14T22:23:02","date_gmt":"2017-11-15T03:23:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/digital.hbs.edu\/platform-rctom\/submission\/never-mind-the-calories-how-much-co2-is-in-your-meal\/"},"modified":"2017-11-15T16:45:32","modified_gmt":"2017-11-15T21:45:32","slug":"never-mind-the-calories-how-much-co2-is-in-your-meal","status":"publish","type":"hck-submission","link":"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/submission\/never-mind-the-calories-how-much-co2-is-in-your-meal\/","title":{"rendered":"Never mind the calories, how much CO2 is in your meal?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/cover-picture-png-no-ref.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-24081 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/cover-picture-png-no-ref.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"339\" height=\"374\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/cover-picture-png-no-ref.png 339w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/cover-picture-png-no-ref-272x300.png 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 339px) 100vw, 339px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This piece of fish took 711ML (24 fl oz) of diesel just to catch.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The world is busy discussing the carbon footprint of consumers in our homes, our transport and even our red meat consumption yet the global fishing industry, contributing 1.2% of global oil consumption annually<sup>2<\/sup> , appears to have dodged the public eye.<\/p>\n<p>The industry is dominated by nine Keystone Actors who collectively take 16% of global fishing catch and according to academic journal PLOS ONE \u201chave a disproportionate influence on the health of the oceans\u201d<sup>3<\/sup>. The 137 year old Maruha Nichiro of Japan (\u2018Mahura\u2019) is one of these Keystone Actors<sup>4<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Mahura and its peers are currently fighting an environmental battle on the health of the world\u2019s fish stocks yet the grave concerns around this sensitive matter have shielded them from a genuine discussion on the climate change impact stemming from the global seafood trade. In fact, in December 2016 Mahura and the other Keystone Actors signed into effect the \u201ckeystone dialogues\u201d which amounted to a pledge of 10 goals on fishery sustainability and marine protection. This pledge is a step in the right direction yet fails to answer one pressing question:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>\u201cIf, due to climate change and unsustainable fishing, nearly 90 percent of seafood species are over-fished<sup>4<\/sup> then why isn\u2019t the world\u2019s largest fishing company investing in reducing its carbon footprint?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Mahura\u2019s results, website and investor publications give no indication of any R&amp;D investment into Carbon Emissions, in fact there is no mention of it\u2019s climate change policies at all<sup>5<\/sup>. Is this a case of big problems first (unsustainable fishing) and little problems second (climate change) or is this an insight into the lack of long-term thinking occuring in conference rooms around the world when it comes to climate change. Arguably, there can be no company with a greater climate threat to its future than Mahura yet there is no genuine investment in green technology.<\/p>\n<p>The global seafood supply chain relies on 20<sup>th<\/sup> century technology to provide 20% of the worlds food<sup>4<\/sup>. The fleet, burning over 50 billion litres of fuel annually<sup>2<\/sup>, has not attempted to harness the renewable energy around it in the oceans, waves and wind. This global fleet, heading further from port every year to maintain its catch, have an enviable position working amongst the worlds strongest natural forces yet there is a neglible amount of renewable energy captured across the entire fleet.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>This global fleet\u2026have an enviable position working amongst the worlds strongest natural forces yet there is a neglible amount of renewable energy harvested across the entire fleet. <\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>They could deploy Beluga Skysails, who have completed pilot tests to reduce fuel consumption by up to 20% of cargo ship fuel on trans-atlantic crossings<sup>6<\/sup>. They could harness wave power as was completed commercially in Hawaii in 2016<sup>7<\/sup> or even grow their wind and solar generation capabilities to enhance their propulsion and refrigeration systems renewable energy component<sup>8<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>These technologies, relying only on R&amp;D already performed by other industries, could make a marked difference in the carbon footprint of the global seafood supply chain. In fact, much like the carbon offsets and rebates on offer to onshore carbon reductions, the signalling effect is as critical to others in the chain as the initial carbon reduction. Mahura can take a leadership position in the entire global seafood industry by proactively harnessing the power of the seas.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/solutions.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22929\" src=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/solutions.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"990\" height=\"292\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/solutions.png 990w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/solutions-300x88.png 300w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/solutions-768x227.png 768w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-rctom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/11\/solutions-600x177.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 990px) 100vw, 990px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But, can we really expect the global fishing fleet to go green in the face of already stressed fish stocks and squeezed margins? Are the established fishing fleets of the world the right actors to make this change or does the world need a \u2018Tesla of the seas\u2019 to see some movement? Does the UN have a bigger role to play in encouraging and facilitating carbon reduction at sea \u201cwhere it is no single nations problem\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>And perhaps the most pressing question, are consumers ready to face up to their impact on the globe with each purchase?
