  {"id":486,"date":"2015-09-13T19:57:07","date_gmt":"2015-09-13T23:57:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/digital.hbs.edu\/platform-digit\/submission\/and-the-next-big-thing-in-retail-is-wal-mart\/"},"modified":"2015-09-13T19:57:07","modified_gmt":"2015-09-13T23:57:07","slug":"and-the-next-big-thing-in-retail-is-wal-mart","status":"publish","type":"hck-submission","link":"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/submission\/and-the-next-big-thing-in-retail-is-wal-mart\/","title":{"rendered":"And the next big thing in retail is\u2026 Wal-Mart?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/09\/Walmart-logo1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-479 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/09\/Walmart-logo1-300x153.jpg\" alt=\"Walmart logo\" width=\"300\" height=\"153\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/09\/Walmart-logo1-300x153.jpg 300w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/09\/Walmart-logo1.jpg 391w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>I would bet that a majority of people wouldn\u2019t expect a company that inspired the website peopleofwalmart.com would be one that is leading the way in digital innovation in retail, but as hard as it is to believe, it\u2019s true.\u00a0 Simply reading the first page of Wal-Mart\u2019s annual report shows the emphasis they are putting on integrating the digital and physical shopping experience for their customers, or as the current CEO Doug McMillon puts it, Wal-Mart\u2019s \u201cintent on creating transformative growth by adding capabilities in e-commerce and mobile commerce\u201d. \u00a0This emphasis on innovation is allowing Wal-Mart to stay competitive in the evolving digital retail space.<\/p>\n<p><strong>@WalmartLabs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Over the last decade the retail giant has made numerous investments in developing innovative ways to meet the evolving shopping needs of their customers.\u00a0 In 2011 Wal-Mart launched @WalmartLabs, a division of the company dedicated to discovering and implementing new ways of improving the digital experience of their customers.\u00a0 Over the years @WalmartLabs has introduced dozens of digital innovations and continues to test new innovations constantly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shipping Options<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Amazon may be able to ship products directly to consumers\u2019 homes, but so can Wal-Mart.\u00a0 Innovations in shipping capabilities allow Wal-Mart shoppers to not only ship products to their home from Walmart.com, but also ship from online to a store near them to pick up later, ship a product from a Wal-Mart store to their home, reserve a product at a store to pick up same day and even get same day delivery in some areas.\u00a0 Wal-Mart shoppers have a plethora of shipping and pickup options, all of which are easily available on Wal-Mart\u2019s online and mobile platforms. \u00a0These options allow customers\u00a0to pick whichever option works best for them on any given day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The \u201cSave Money.
