  {"id":4491,"date":"2017-03-20T11:01:24","date_gmt":"2017-03-20T15:01:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/digital.hbs.edu\/platform-digit\/submission\/boaty-mcboatface-what-can-happen-when-you-empower-the-crowd\/"},"modified":"2017-03-20T18:49:32","modified_gmt":"2017-03-20T22:49:32","slug":"boaty-mcboatface-lessons-from-failed-crowdsourcing","status":"publish","type":"hck-submission","link":"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/submission\/boaty-mcboatface-lessons-from-failed-crowdsourcing\/","title":{"rendered":"Boaty McBoatface- Lessons From Failed Crowdsourcing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 2016, Britain\u2019s Environmental Research Council (NERC) elected to \u2018crowdsource\u2019 the name of its new 300-million-dollar, state of the art, research vessel.\u00a0 The Public responded with 124,000 votes (roughly 85% of votes cast) for \u201cBoaty McBoatface.\u201d \u00a0As <u>The Atlantic<\/u> reported, \u201cThe people of the Internet had spoken emphatically, and they\u2019d spoken like a five-year-old.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\">[i]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This episode highlighted an inherent downside of seeking the wisdom of the crowd.\u00a0 Similar outcomes were seen when internet trolls, prompted by group chats in the popular website 4chan, voted a school for hearing impaired children as the winner of a VH1 contest to host a concert by pop-icon Taylor Swift.<a href=\"#_edn2\" name=\"_ednref2\">[ii]<\/a>\u00a0 Despite these well-known failures to harness the creative power of internet users; there have also been numerous examples of successful campaigns to help start businesses, (kickstarter), or continually design new fashion (threadless), and even a NASA project to make the International Space Station more safe for astronauts.<a href=\"#_edn3\" name=\"_ednref3\">[iii]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If there can be positive examples of how companies and organizations have asked the public for their ideas and not received ridicule in response, what then can explain the difference?\u00a0 How can companies like Kickstarter and Threadless exists, while the NERC was stuck explaining to its voters how the research vessel would in fact be named the RRS Sir David Attenborough, a name that placed 4<sup>th<\/sup> in its contest, when Boaty McBoatface had received 3 times the number of votes than any other.<a href=\"#_edn4\" name=\"_ednref4\">[iv]<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, a number of 性视界 Business Review articles have been written on the topic.\u00a0 Although varying in their support for the idea of crowdsourcing campaigns, a common thread of lessons can be extracted from the articles.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Vetting:<\/p>\n<p>Although this is counter-intuitive to an idea designed to garner the greatest breadth of contributions, some level of vetting the community participating in the crowd-sourcing idea is always necessary.\u00a0 Any simple attempts to request feedback from anonymous recipients is likely to invite non-serious responses and enable the trolling campaigns of sites like 4chan. Although vetting is necessary to some level, intrusive levels of screening will have the counter effect of dissuading users from participating.
