  {"id":3501,"date":"2017-02-02T17:38:14","date_gmt":"2017-02-02T22:38:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/digital.hbs.edu\/platform-digit\/submission\/beat-cancer-with-enlitic-a-winner-in-medical-diagnostics\/"},"modified":"2017-02-02T17:43:18","modified_gmt":"2017-02-02T22:43:18","slug":"beat-cancer-with-enlitic-a-winner-in-medical-diagnostics","status":"publish","type":"hck-submission","link":"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/submission\/beat-cancer-with-enlitic-a-winner-in-medical-diagnostics\/","title":{"rendered":"Beat Cancer with Enlitic: A Winner in Medical Diagnostics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><u>Context<\/u><\/p>\n<p>A fledgling startup, Enlitic is shaking up the world of disease diagnostics one X-ray at a time.\u00a0 Founded in 2014 with $15MM in funding to date, Enlitic harnesses deep learning, a subset of AI that leverages sophisticated and parallel computational techniques mimicking the human brain, to train computers to screen medical images for cancer and fractures.<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a>\u00a0 And with unprecedented access to cheap computing power, sophisticated\u00a0algorithms, and troves of data, Enlitic is just getting started.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0After reflecting on its business model and assets, I\u00a0see Enlitic as a winner, fundamentally changing the healthcare ecosystem as we move to a world where cost-management increasingly matters\u00a0for providers pressured by\u00a0healthcare outcomes\u00a0vs\u00a0the previous fee-for-service model.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><u>How Enlitic creates value via its operating model:<\/u><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>1) It beats your doctor on accuracy and speed of diagnosis, leading to cost savings and incremental revenue generation for diagnostics.<\/em> When exposed to a dataset of \u00a0X-ray images, Enlitic\u2019s algorithm identified instances of lung cancer more accurately than a panel of radiologists \u2013 <em>and by 50%.<\/em><a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a> Its algorithm can detect abnormalities that may be overlooked by the human eye, identifying minuscule fractures .01% the size of the\u00a0entire X-ray.<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a>\u00a0 Pitched as a tool to help doctors rather than to replace them (for now), the company further claims to increase diagnostic accuracy by 50-70% and speed by 50,000X.<a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\">[4]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Why does this matter?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The efficiencies yielded from this technology allow a single doctor to be scaled to conduct more tasks.<a href=\"#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\">[5]<\/a>\u00a0 By allocating routine, time-consuming image tasks to machines, doctors can focus on higher-level tasks, such as treatment recommendations, that require human-level judgment beyond the current capabilities of AI.<a href=\"#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\">[6]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>One could see Enlitic\u2019s technology driving commoditization in the service of diagnosis itself, thus increasing the value of further downstream services like treatment.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>2) With renowned data scientist Jeremy Howard at the helm, Enlitic has the data science expertise to continually hone a diagnostic algorithm that self-learns and gets better with more training data. <\/em>It may even be trained faster, better, and <em>cheaper<\/em> than your average med school student. <a href=\"#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\">[7]<\/a>\u00a0Network effects add further to this feedback loop,\u00a0allowing for information sharing across previous hospital siloes of information.<\/p>\n<p><em>3) This could eventually extend diagnostic services to underserved segments, <\/em>including rural patients or those treated during times where the right doctor is unavailable.<\/p>\n<p><em>4) The algorithm\u2019s diagnostic process leaves behind an audit trail of how it came to its decision, <\/em>which serves as an asset in pedagogy and litigation.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">How Enlitic captures value:<\/span><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Through sharing in the profit realized from its clients.<a href=\"#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\">[8]<\/a>\u00a0 This is a risky move for a startup with a limited track record, but one can argue this demonstrates its confidence in its potential.\u00a0 While there\u2019s limited public information on Enlitic\u2019s traction to date, we do know it is being implemented by one of its investors Capitol Health Limited, an Australian healthcare company providing diagnostic imaging services.<a href=\"#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\">[9]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>While Enlitic exhibits a winning strategy, I\u2019ll be watching to answer some outstanding questions:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Will we see continued\u00a0adoption by doctors? There\u2019s lots of hype around machine learning\u2019s predictive potential, but the way it arrives at a given conclusion can be a black box.
