The foursome had spent the evening there celebrating Kissy Suzuki\u2019s 56<sup>th<\/sup> birthday. Flymaster Fly\u2122 reported back on the conversation \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Kissy \u2013 The dim sum there was great \u2013 I loved it! The crowd was fun too!<\/p>\n<p>Dr. No \u2013 What a hellhole. I\u2019d sooner call it \u2018Bird Flu\u2019. Thank goodness all of you ate my dishes. I\u2019m glad you all enjoyed it, but I\u2019m having some kabab as soon as I get home.<\/p>\n<p>Cash-Strapped Khashoggi (CSK) \u2013 It was alright. It doesn\u2019t stand up to the places I used to frequent with my crew in Hong Kong, but I suppose it was fine. Nothing amazing, though.<\/p>\n<p>Sonja Petrovskaya \u2013 Ambiance was fun, but the servers were too familiar. I\u2019d have to agree with CSK \u2013 food was just alright. Dim sum dumbed down. Fun place overall though.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s wrong with this picture? This crowd of four comes from the same socio-economic background (yes, even CSK at this point), typically shares similar tastes, and this place has the Michelin stamp of approval, after all. If they all posted reviews to Yelp, who should I believe? Even Michelle L.? Who\u2019s to say she\u2019s a Kissy Suzuki, Dr. No, Cash Strapped Khashoggi, or a Sonja Petrovskaya type of character?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>Act II &#8211; The Conflict<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This brings us to the problem of <em>relevance<\/em> on Yelp, or the lack thereof, when it comes to reviews of experiences that are highly subjective, such as restaurants.<\/p>\n<p>The fact of the matter is, Yelp provides no dimension to capture this when reviews are submitted. As a consumer of reviews, I\u2019m therefore left to blindly guess the relevance of a given review, or even the relevance of the average star rating from1,500 people vis-\u00e0-vis my own taste. The point people make that about the \u201claw of large numbers\u201d \u2013 that an average over so many people should be indicative \u2013 doesn\u2019t hold, because I don\u2019t know who that group is, or what standard they represent. \u201cWhat is their average <em>an average of<\/em>?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To summarize, these are the reasons why a Yelp restaurant review fails to capture and communicate relevance, and also why their level of accuracy can\u2019t be trusted:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>(1) No measure of the reviewer\u2019s taste(s) relative to my own (ie I don\u2019t know who these people are + only 1% of Yelpers post reviews \u2013 there is already some sort of inherent bias in who falls under the character of \u201cthe Yelp reviewer\u201d)<\/li>\n<li>(2) No measure of context of the reviewer\u2019s visit to the restaurant<\/li>\n<li>(3) No segmentation of review criteria (ie. Cuisine, setting, service, etc are not broken out. A lump sum star score average doesn\u2019t point to which of these factors may have influenced the rating more or less)<\/li>\n<li>(4) Social influence bias (\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/sloanreview.mit.edu\/article\/the-problem-with-online-ratings-2\/\">Research at MIT<\/a> suggests [online reviews] are systematically biased. When it comes to online ratings, our herd instincts combine with our susceptibility to positive \u201csocial influence.\u201d When we see other people have enjoyed a hotel or restaurant \u2014 and rewarded them with a high online rating \u2014 this can cause us to feel the same positive feelings and to likewise provide a similarly high rating.\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/officialblog.yelp.com\/2015\/05\/yelpifying-michael-bauers-sf-chronicle-restaurant-list.html\">On Yelp<\/a>: 21.9% are 3.5 stars, 61.9% are 4 stars, and 16.2% are 4.5 stars &#8211; also demonstrating a herding effect to \u201cmiddle\u201d ratings)<\/li>\n<li>(5) Fraudulent reviews<\/li>\n<li>(6) Yelp filters reviews, but doesn\u2019t do the best job filtering<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In Act III, we focus on potential solutions for those 3 first points impacting \u201crelevance\u201d of reviews.<\/p>\n<p><em>Act III \u2013 D\u00e9nouement<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For possible solutions to the problem of relevance, we can tear a page out of \u201cUrban Daddy\u2019s\u201d playbook \u2013 yes, you read correctly, \u201cUrban Daddy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/ud1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1936\" src=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/ud1-1024x814.jpg\" alt=\"ud1\" width=\"640\" height=\"509\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/ud1-1024x814.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/ud1-300x238.jpg 300w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/ud1-600x477.jpg 600w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/ud1.jpg 1189w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/ud3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1937\" src=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/ud3-1024x567.jpg\" alt=\"ud3\" width=\"640\" height=\"354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/ud3-1024x567.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/ud3-300x166.jpg 300w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/ud3-600x332.jpg 600w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/ud3.jpg 1189w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If Yelp were to incorporate some simple categories of criteria such as these when reviews are posted, this would allow users to then look up a type of review with a higher level of granularity. I, as a consumer, could then have these categories to filter down to reviews more relevant to my particular context and taste(s). Additionally, having a given review broken out into simple categories of \u201cCuisine\u201d, \u201cAmbiance\u201d, \u201cNoise level\u201d, etc, \u201cOverall\u201d would further enhance relevance for readers.<\/p>\n<p>This type of solution could also help increase relevance of other types of more subjective experiences\/products that are reviewed \u2013 hotels, tours, etc\u2026<\/p>\n<p>WORD COUNT: 742<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>No flies or fictional characters were harmed in the making of this post.
