to talk about sports and social happenings. \u00a0Two years later, SmackHigh\u00a0has a following of over 850,000 high school students and is\u00a0in 26 states <a href=\"https:\/\/angel.co\/smackhigh\/jobs\">[1]<\/a>. \u00a0It&#8217;s not hard to see why students like it:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/SmackHighIG2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1300\" src=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/SmackHighIG2-1024x663.png\" alt=\"SmackHighIG2\" width=\"640\" height=\"414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/SmackHighIG2-1024x663.png 1024w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/SmackHighIG2-300x194.png 300w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/SmackHighIG2-600x389.png 600w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/SmackHighIG2.png 1369w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Alright it&#8217;s cool, but how again does this fight against bullying?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Unlike other anonymous social media platforms, <strong>SmackHigh using volunteer brand ambassadors to filter submissions before posting them on the platform&#8217;s social media channels.<\/strong> \u00a0The platform&#8217;s website clearly states the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smackhigh.com\/community\">community values<\/a>, and asks the community not to post threats, hateful content, and harassment and bullying. \u00a0This can be contrasted with the popular social media platform Yik Yak, which was used by students to find parties within a 5-mile radius but had issues of bullying and racist comments.<\/p>\n<p>In the Boston Globe&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.betaboston.com\/news\/2015\/08\/19\/smackhigh-raises-1-65-million-for-its-social-media-platform-that-discourages-bullying\/\">recent profile<\/a> of the company, it notes that\u00a0users have started to censor themselves after observing\u00a0that the brand ambassadors were blocking negative posts about specific classmates. \u00a0SmackHigh now has over 7,000 brand ambassadors curating submissions. \u00a0<strong>Although it&#8217;s difficult\u00a0to claim\u00a0that SmackHigh is preventing bullying outside of their platform, it is providing a safe space for students to interact.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>What is SmackHigh doing to grow?\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>SmackHigh&#8217;s platform benefits from both direct and indirect network effects and scale is critical.<\/strong> \u00a0On the direct network effects, more students on the platform means more varied and interesting content for each student user. \u00a0And <strong>SmackHigh has\u00a0built a partnership with Atlanta&#8217;s Fox 5 Sports <\/strong>which can serve as an interesting model for indirect network effects <a href=\"http:\/\/bostinno.streetwise.co\/2015\/03\/26\/smackhigh-twitter-accounts-curate-high-school-news-sports-videos\/\">[2]<\/a>. \u00a0SmackHigh uses its platform to tell Fox what the most popular game of the week is in Georgia. \u00a0In return, Fox broadcasts the game and shows the SmackHigh brand.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/Youtube-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1291 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/Youtube-2-300x178.png\" alt=\"Youtube 2\" width=\"300\" height=\"178\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/Youtube-2-300x178.png 300w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/Youtube-2-600x355.png 600w, https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/10\/Youtube-2.png 969w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Georgia high school student section POWDER TOSS (FOX + SmackHigh)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oj4KZBUNhFw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">To support its growth, SmackHigh has attracted <strong>$1.65 Mn in seed funding from\u00a0FlyBridge Capital Partners, Boston Seed Capital, and investor Wayne Chang<\/strong>. It&#8217;s also in the <strong>TechStars Boston 2015 class<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em><strong>Looking to the future&#8230;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">SmackHigh has a lot of potential, but it remains to be seen whether the initial\u00a0user growth can be sustained. \u00a0Students have many social media outlets, and <strong>it&#8217;s hard to tell whether many students will seek the inter-school community that SmackHigh offers or if most will just stay with their existing friend circles<\/strong>. \u00a0And now that SmackHigh has raised capital, they will need to find ways to generate a return for their investors, which means that the indirect network effects\u00a0need to be\u00a0a\u00a0high priority. <strong>\u00a0If SmackHigh can generate enough value for partners like Fox, they may be able to charge for their services. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">I remain hopeful for SmackHigh, as I do think\u00a0many high school students would find value in a safe social space online. \u00a0And it really is pretty entertaining.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SmackHigh aims to build inter-school community through friendly smack talk and shared experiences in a safe online space<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":101,"featured_media":1302,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","template":"","categories":[564,565,260],"class_list":["post-1301","hck-submission","type-hck-submission","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-bullying","category-growth","category-social-media"],"connected_submission_link":"https:\/\/d3.harvard.edu\/platform-digit\/assignment\/competing-with-network-effects\/","yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
